Abstract

We investigated 33 cases of gastric carcinoma to determine the density of infiltrates of S-100 protein-positive Langerhans cells(LC) using immunohistochemical method.
The determination of the quantity of Langerhans cells proved to be a effective means of assessing the prognosis of gastric carcinoma. The population density of S-100 protein-positive cells correlated with the histologic type, nodal status and
postoperative survival rate.
In patients with a marked infiltration of S-100 protein positive cells, 3 year survival rate was longer than for those in whom the infiltration was slight. But there was no clinical significance in 5 year survival rate.
These findings suggest that Langerhans cells may play an important role in the defense mechanism of the host against the tumor in the gastric carcinoma.
